Australia’s Caspian Oil & Gas has encountered hydrocarbons with the West Mailisu-2 well in the Northern Fergana Basin in Kyrgyzstan. Oil shows were encountered in the secondary target Bed II sandstone over a 20ft (6m) interval at a depth of between 5,548-5,568ft (1,691-1,697m). Caspian chief executive Graeme Parsons described the discovery as a surprise because oil was not commonly found in Bed II in the Northern Fergana Basin.
