The UK has awarded 46 new North Sea exploration licences, the Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC) has confirmed. The awards were made as part of the 26th offshore oil and gas licensing round, which was originally announced in October 2010. Some 144 licences were handed out in this round, but a number of blocks were held back from award due to the need for further assessment on Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) and Special Protection Areas (SPAs).
