The landmark climate deal reached in Paris in December is edging closer to becoming a functioning global agreement, carried forward by an unprecedented level of international support on its opening day for signatures on Friday (IOD Dec.15'15). A total of 171 countries signed up--a first-day record for an international agreement, easily beating the 119 set by the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea in 1982--at a showpiece event at UN headquarters in New York attended by over 60 world leaders.
