Infiltrators belonging to Islamic State blew up two wells in Kirkuk province's 30,000 b/d Khabbaz oil field in northern Iraq early Wednesday morning, local press reported. Two other wells were booby-trapped, but did not ignite, the reports said. Islamic State also attacked Khabbaz last year (IOD Feb.3'15). The latest operation comes amid a series of counterattacks launched by the group to sabotage preparations for an offensive against Mosul. Khabbaz is one of three fields that Kirkuk-based state oil firm North Oil Co. (NOC) continues to operate.
