Russia, Ukraine Square Off With New Gas Claims

The multibillion-dollar natural gas claims flying back and forth between Russia and Ukraine are set to get even bigger in coming weeks, with Russia's Gazprom submitting a bill for undelivered volumes and Ukraine poised to hit Moscow with higher tariffs for gas transit. Gazprom issued a statement Tuesday saying it has invoiced state Naftogaz Ukrainy for $2.55 billion in gas for the third quarter of last year pursuant to the "take-or-pay" clause in the two sides' 2009 contract. The bill is for 10.48 billion cubic meters, or one-quarter of Ukraine's minimum annual contractual purchase requirement, Gazprom said.
