Statoil CEO: Replacing Coal With Gas Key to Low-Carbon Future

With the Paris climate accord set to come into effect on Nov. 4, there's no escape for the oil and gas industry from the impact of climate policies either direct or indirect. That prompts a critical question: How will the industry manage the transition to a low-carbon world? Statoil Chief Executive Eldar Saetre said Tuesday that it would be "the biggest shift our modern-day energy system has ever faced" and emphasized the need to aggressively replace coal with cleaner-burning natural gas.
