A law on liberalizing Ukraine's natural gas market came into effect on Thursday, a pivotal step in the country's headlong pursuit to reform its dysfunctional energy sector and integrate its economy with the EU. The new law will break up state-owned Naftogaz Ukrainy's monopoly on importing, distributing, and selling gas on the 35 billion cubic meter per year domestic market. Independent firms will be able to operate as traders and consumers will eventually have the right to choose their providers.
