India's Cabinet has approved investment plans for Iran's Chabahar port, which will give the country access to Afghanistan and Central Asia without passing through Pakistan. The investment approval underlines Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's efforts to build closer ties with Iran as frosty relations between Tehran and the Western world thaw. India has dragged its feet over the port development for over a decade amid tightening US and EU sanctions on Iran due to its alleged nuclear weapons program. The government is now seeking to fast-track the project amid reports that China is also eyeing a stake.
