China Sounds Another Winter Gas Warning

China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) has for the second successive year warned of a probable natural gas shortage in the coming winter months--despite widespread concerns of oversupply in many quarters, while Chinese customs data showed gas imports from Myanmar dried up completely last month. "In case of continued cold weather, the gas shortage will be more severe," the NDRC said in a statement, which also flagging up the unpredictability of pipeline gas supplies from Central Asia. Transit state Kazakhstan has been known to take China-bound Turkmen gas for its own needs when hit by shortfalls, while Uzbekistan struggles to ship enough volumes. Imported LNG is priced too high for Chinese end-users to accept, the statement noted.
