Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev warned on Thursday that Western sanctions are putting an additional strain on the global economy and said that the West must lift them in order to improve economic ties with Moscow. Speaking at the East Asia Summit in Myanmar's capital, Naypyidaw, Medvedev said the sanctions -- targeting key industries including Russia's energy sector, where unconventional oil plans and ventures with international majors are at risk -- are counterproductive. It is up to the West to restore diplomatic relations by lifting the sanctions, he added (IOD Sep.15'14).
