After more than three years since the 2011 Fukushima disaster, the Japanese cabinet finally approved Friday a revised basic energy policy charted for the next 20 years -- albeit one thin on specifics. The new policy overturns the zero-nuclear goal set by the previous administration by defining nuclear energy as an "important baseload power source" to ensure stable electricity supplies and pledging to "proceed with the reactivation of nuclear power plants which have satisfied stringent safety standards." In the long term, the government promised to reduce nuclear dependence as much as possible, but did not provide any numerical targets (IOD Apr.2'14).
