Medvedev Defends Gazprom at Davos Summit

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said an end to Gazprom’s gas export monopoly is “possible in theory” so long as it does not result in diminished profits for the state. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Medvedev addressed the issue of the Russian state gas giant’s monopoly on exports and suggested reforms could occur under the right market circumstances. “If this should be done, we should do a minute forecasting of all the aftermaths of the move,” Medvedev told Bloomberg News. “This is possible in theory because we have independent suppliers of natural gas now but we mustn’t lose money.”
