Japan Halts Methane Hydrate Trial

Japan has terminated a trial to extract natural gas from methane hydrates after a week-long production period, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said this week. The trial, which began Mar. 12, was called off on Mar. 18 due to bad weather and pumping equipment issues (IOD Mar.13’13). The trial took place offshore the country’s southeastern coast from the Atsumi to the Shima Peninsulas, and was originally scheduled to last until the end of this month.
