摘要

Kazakhstan’s parliamentary elections on Sunday resulted in a landslide victory — as widely expected — for the dominant Nur Otan party, but two opposition parties gained small toeholds following deadly riots that rocked the oil town of Zhanaozen, precipitating a state of emergency and sparking a potential political crisis. The elections were the first in which the party which received the secondlargest amount of votes was guaranteed seats in parliament regardless of whether it reached the 7% threshold formerly required. Nur Otan won 80.7% of the vote while pro-business party Ak Zhol, headed by a former Nur Otan member, took 7.3%. The Communist People’s Party also garnered 7.2% of the vote.
