摘要

Two influential US Senators have hinted at a possible easing of sanctions against Myanmar if elections to be held in April are free and fair — a move that would add momentum to the rapprochement between the two countries since Myanmar opened up to democratic reforms. Senator Joe Lieberman said on Thursday that if parliamentary elections on Apr. 1 — to be contested by reform leader Aung San Suu Kyi — are open and legitimate there could be “some response from the United States in terms of the status quo between our countries as it exists now.” “And certainly lifting of the sanctions, or some of them, would be part of that consideration,” added Senator John McCain. The two senior senators will be visiting Myanmar this weekend.
