China has unveiled a higher-than-expected goal to more than triple coalbed methane (CBM) production by 2015 as part of its new five-year economic plan. The National Energy Administration (NEA), a division of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), announced a new target over the weekend of 30 billion cubic meters per year (2.9 billion cubic feet per day) of CBM production by 2015. Surface extraction will account for 16 Bcm of the output while the rest will come from coal mine methane (CMM).
