Total Mulls Relief Wells to Stop Elgin Leak

Total on Friday was mulling plans to drill two relief wells to intercept the gas leak from its North Sea Elgin platform while also looking at ways of extinguishing the flare left alight when workers fled the rig the previous Sunday, amid continued concern the escaping gas cloud could ignite and destroy the rig (IOD Mar.30'12). According to Total EP UK's managing director, Philippe Guys, gas has been leaking at a rate of about 200,000 cubic meters (7.1 million cubic feet) per day.
