Some of Canada’s biggest oil sands producers stepped out of the shadows this week to formally announce they had signed shipping and financing deals in support of Enbridge’s C$6.6 billion (US$6.5 billion) Northern Gateway oil pipeline from Northern Alberta to Canada’s Pacific coast. Their participation was confirmed by Canada’s National Energy Board on the eve of hearings scheduled to start Tuesday on the controversial project, aimed at securing new Asian markets for oil sands crude.
