BP: Shale Gale Points to Energy Independence for North America

North America should achieve energy independence by 2030 due to growth in unconventional oil and gas, biofuels and a gradual decline in petroleum demand in the region, according to a new long-range forecast by UK major BP. Largely due to higher expectations for evolving shale plays, BP has increased its projection for North American oil and gas supplies for 2030 by some 134 million tons of oil equivalent per year (2.7 million barrels of oil equivalent per day) compared to last year’s forecast (IOD Jan.20’11).
