The UK's largest gas-fired power plant, which RWE has almost completed at Pem- broke in southwest Wales, has now been cleared to operate — despite official advice that it could irrevocably damage the area's marine ecology. The Welsh regional government's environ- ment department has given the critical go- ahead to the UK Environment Agency to permit the 2,000 megawatt combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant to commence op- erations next year (WGI Jun.10'09).
