US 'Nuclear Renaissance' Less Likely

The nuclear disaster currently playing out at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi power plant will have little immediate impact on the US nuclear industry, but could add to longerterm trends currently undermining the "nuclear renaissance" in the US. With radioactive wastewater reportedly flowing into the Pacific Ocean from the stricken plant, Japan's government has raised its assessment of the gravity of the accident to a 7 on an official scale of 1 to 7 - making it equivalent to the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. The Three Mile Island accident in the US in 1979 was rated a 5 on the industry's International Nuclear Events Scale (Ines).
