Top US Regulator Promises More Offshore Drilling Improvements

The top US offshore oil and gas regulator said Tuesday his agency would soon launch a "broad, inclusive and ambitious" new rulemaking process to further enhance offshore drilling safety. The initiative will encompass both prescriptive and performance-based standards. Michael Bromwich, director of the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Revenue and Enforcement (BOEMRE), countered criticisms that the US government has not done enough to improve offshore safety practices or hold the oil industry accountable in the year which has passed since the blowout and oil spill disaster at BP's Macondo well in the Gulf of Mexico.
