New EU Cars Get Greener

Average carbon dioxide emissions from new cars in the EU dropped by almost 4% in 2010, the second biggest annual fall on record, according to data published Wednesday by the European Environment Agency. Although the average engine capacity of cars sold in 2010 increased slightly, as did their weight, CO2 emissions per kilometer travelled dropped as a result of better vehicle technology and fuel efficiency. The improvements bring the average CO2 emissions of cars registered in the EU to 140 grams/km. At this rate, the 130g/km target will be met earlier than the 2015 deadline, the EU said (IOD Dec.3'08).
