US Regulators Set Gulf Lease Sale Date

US regulators have finally nailed down a date for the first federal lease sale of oil and gas blocks in the Gulf of Mexico since last year's BP oil spill disaster. Lease Sale 218 for tracts in the Western Gulf will be held in New Orleans on Dec. 14. The last Gulf of Mexico lease sale was held in March 2010, one month before a blowout at BP's Macondo well destroyed the Deepwater Horizon rig, killed 11 workers and set off the largest offshore oil spill in US history. The auctions had previously been held twice a year.
