An explosion and fire have damaged a pipeline in Syria's eastern oil-producing region of Deir ez-Zour. The cause is unclear: The government, which is trying to quash sustained street protests pushing for change, says the blast may have resulted from a leak, but eyewitnesses reportedly said the line was bombed. The pipe links the Omar and Thayyem central processing facilities operated by the Royal Dutch Shell-led Al-Furat Petroleum Co. venture. Al-Furat accounted for about 91,000 b/d of Syria's 390,000 b/d production last month (IOD Jul.5'11).
