Researchers Say Arctic Oil and Gas Bonanza a Long Way Off

Although warmer temperatures will reduce ice formation in the Arctic and open it to increased oil and gas exploration, there most likely won't be "any large increase" in the extraction of hydrocarbons in the region before 2050, according to a new study by Norwegian researchers. The researchers concluded that there will be only a "small, if any, increase in the production of Arctic oil and gas towards 2030 and 2050" based on an oil price assumption of $80 per barrel. The study was conducted jointly by the Center for International Climate and Environmental Research – Oslo (Cicero), Det Norske Veritas and Statistics Norway.
