UAE Calls September Poll

The UAE says it will hold its second set of elections for the consultative council on Sep. 24. At least 12,000 citizens, preselected by the rulers of the seven-emirate federation, will vote to elect half of the 40 members of the Federal National Council (FNC), the government advisory panel. The remaining 20 seats will be appointed directly by the rulers. In the country's first elections in 2006, 6,700 emiratis voted for 20 FNC members. At the time, the UAE said the next elections would be in 2010.
