After a checkered past marked by missed targets and credibility problems, the world's automakers are pushing ahead with plans to launch hydrogen fuel-cell cars on a commercial scale within five years, focusing on a small number of concentrated markets in an attempt to make the revolutionary technology work. But big oil majors, which were closely involved in earlier stages of the technology, have stepped to the sidelines -and were largely absent from the industry's biennial Hydrogen & Fuel Cells conference in Vancouver, Canada, last week.
