Royal Dutch Shell on Friday sent down divers to close the relief valves that were allowing oil to escape from a flowline beneath its Gannet Alpha platform in the UK North Sea. "There will now be a period of extensive monitoring to determine whether the operation has been successful and whether the leak has been stemmed," UK government representative for maritime salvage and intervention Hugh Shaw said.
