Europe's third-largest power and gas utility E.On increased net profits for 2009, but saw adjusted net income sag by 5%, which was below analysts' expectations. E.On, the biggest utility in Europe that is not largely state-owned, significantly increased power volume sales. The German company's gas sales were also slightly up, but this was largely because 2009 was the first year it fully incorporated new assets in Spain and Italy, both among the countries worst-affected by last year's Europe-wide slump in industrial energy demand.
