Giant UK Wind Farm Starts

The first electricity from what is likely to be the world’s largest offshore wind farm — a 300 MW project by Sweden’s Vattenfall off southeastern England — was sent to the UK grid on Sunday. On completion, the project will become the biggest operational offshore wind farm in the world, although larger off- shore schemes are under construction in Northwest Europe. So far, 73 out of 100 wind turbines have been erected in the Thanet Offshore Wind Farm project, 12 km off the Kent coast in water depths of up to 25 meters. Construction began in 2008 and should be completed later this summer, Vat- tenfall said Tuesday.
