UK to Double Offshore Rig Checks to Bolster North Sea Safety

UK regulators plan to double the number of yearly rig inspections in the North Sea in the wake of BP’s catastrophic oil spill in the US Gulf of Mexico (see p1). “A review has been carried out by DECC [Department of Energy and Climate Change] officials, which has found that our existing system is fit for purpose, but in light of the spill in the Gulf we are strength- ening the regime further,” Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change Chris Huhne said Tuesday.
