UK to Cap Utility Returns

UK gas and electricity regulator Ofgem said Monday that the country's 14 distribution network operators will be subject to a 4.7% return on investment under the next price control review period from 2010-15. Ofgem is urging operators to spend ￡6.7 billion ($10.9 billion) over the next five years to upgrade high-voltage networks and link new renewable generation capacity to the UK grid. The spending is 40% up on the level proposed by Ofgem under the current price control period. A new ￡500 million green fund is being made available to utilities that develop low-carbon and smart grid technologies.
