A US mandate designed to increase the usage of biofuels in the transportation sector could have unforeseen impacts on the nation's water supply, according to a new report released by Rice University's Shell Center for Sustainability. An increase in the farming of feedstock used in the generation of biofuels would consume large quantities of water and generate increased agricultural run-off containing fertilizers, pesticides and sediment, exacerbating water pollution, the report found.
