GDF Suez Plunges Into Qatar

GDF Suez has waded into exploration offshore Qatar through the purchase of US independent Anadarko's stake in Block 4, the two companies said Monday. The French utility will hold 60% of the block and take over as operator. It has long been seeking an opportunity to break into exploration in Qatar, which has massive gas reserves. It had most recently been said to be studying a deep gas exploration block that Qatar offered to foreign companies but did not end up awarding (IOD Apr.16,p6). Italian power company Edison will hold the remaining 40%.
