French Make UAE Nuclear Bid

Total is among a group of French companies that submitted a final bid Wednesday night to sell at least two nuclear reactors to the UAE (IOD Oct.6,p2). The consortium, led by state-owned EDF, also includes GDF Suez and nuclear contractor Areva. Abu Dhabi says the UAE needs nuclear energy to plug a future power deficit. Local demand is expected to reach 40,000 MW by 2020, but gas supplies are sufficient to sustain production at just 25,000 MW.
