KGd_(1-x)(MoO4),:Er~(3+)/Yb~(2+) phosphors with doping concentrations of Er~(3+) and Yb~(3+) (x = Er~(3+)+ Yb~(3+), Er~(3+) = 0.05,0.1, 0.2 and Ybz~(3+) = 0.2,0.45) Er~(3+) and Yb~(3+) (Er~(3+) = 0.05,0.1,0.2 and Yb~(3+) = 0.2,0.45) were successfully synthesized by a cyclic microwave-assisted sol-gel process and the upconversion and spectroscopic properties were investigated. Well-crystallized particles showed a fine and homogeneous morphology with particle sizes of 2-8 urn. Under excitation at 980 nm, KGd_(0.2)(MoO4)2:Er_90.1)Yb_(0.1) and KGd_(0.5)(MoO4)2:Er_(0.05)Yb_(0.45) particles exhibited a strong 525 nm emission band, a weak 550 nm emission band in the green region and a very weak 655 nm emission band in the red region. The Raman spectra of KGd_(0.8)(MoO4)2:Er_(0.2), KGd_(0.7)(MoO4)2:Er_(0.1)Yb_(0.2) and KGd_(0.5)(MoO4)2:Er_(0.05)Yb_(0.45) particles indicated the domination of strong peaks at higher frequencies (1050,1065,1125, 1185,1284, 1350 and 1420 cm~(-1)) and at lower frequencies (258, 388,462, 558, 630 and 674 cm~(-1)).
