IEA’s Chief Economist, Fatih Birol, Will Become Executive Director of the Agency on 1 September

The International Energy Agency (IEA) announced on 13 February that its next Executive Director would be Mr. Fatih Birol, who has been a familiar face in international energy circles for many years. He is a Turk who was born in Ankara in 1958 (see sidebar for his biography) and joined the IEA in 1995. He has thus been with the organization for an exceptionally long time, given that the IEA normally employs people under fixed‐term contracts that are not often renewed.
