ConocoPhillips Makes its Entree into Algeria by Taking Over Burlington Resources

Of the world's six largest private-sector oil companies,the three European ones in this group-BP,Royal Dutch Shell and Total-are all engaged in exploration-production in Algeria,while none of the other three,the American companies ExxonMobil,Chevron and ConocoPhillips,are,at least not at the moment.This situation is set to change shortly for ConocoPhillips,which has not so far decided to invest in Algeria directly but is going to find itself in control of a number of upstream(exploration,development and production)assets in the country as a result of its acquisition of another U.S.company,Burlington Resources Inc.
