The Colombian coal sector grew by 33.8pc in the first quarter of 2014 from a year earlier as several international mining companies expanded operations. The coal sector helped the country's GDP grow by 6.4pc in the first quarter from last year, the fastest quarterly growth since 2011, the national statistics department said yesterday. The coal industry also spurred growth in the broader mining sector, which expanded by 5.6pc, one of the fastest growing segments of the economy.
