Southern signs major deals for Illinois basin coal

Southern Co. signed contracts to buy 15mn-20mn short tons (13.6mn-18.1mn metric tonnes) of Illinois basin coal from a number of suppliers over the next five years. The purchases were made off a request for proposals that Southern issued in July. At the time, Southern was seeking 2mn st of coal for 2014 and up to 4mn st/yr beginning in 2015 for various plants with desired qualities ranging from 11,100 Btu/lb to 13,000 Btu/lb, maximum 5.2lb SO_2/mmBtu and no more than 15pc moisture or 16pc ash.
