Northern Appalachian steam coal markets edged higher this week as less-traditional customers in Kentucky and the southeastern US test or increase reliance on the basin’s coals. Coal with 13,000 Btu/lb and 4.5lb SO2/mmBtu rose by 75 cents/ short ton to $54.25/st for the first quarter of 2015. Calendar year 2015 gained 30 cents to $56.30/st. Coal with the same heat content and 3.5lb SO 2/mmBtu also climbed by 75 cents for the prompt quarter, to $55.75/st, while the 2015 strip gained 50 cents to $58/st.
