Markets firm heading into winter buying

Direct markets for US coal were mostly flat this week as prompt buying remained slow ahead of the winter heating season. One producer said he expects demand this winter to be more normal than last year, when above-average temperatures dented coal burns. A number of utilities have requests for proposals out for 2013-2015 and the results could shed light on forward pricing.
