Rhino targets higher output despite mine problem

Annual coal production for Rhino Resources could grow as much as 21pc this year despite a temporary setback at one of its Kentucky mines, the company said today. Rhino has closed a section of its Mine No. 28 in eastern Kentucky after the limestone roof leaked crude oil, the company said today during the release of fourth-quarter earnings. But several other mines will come online this year and Rhino expects to increase total production to 4.9-5.2mn short tons (4.4-4.7mn metric tonnes), up from 4.3mn st in 2010, executives said. Rhino’s fourth-quarter 2010 coal sales dropped to 1.1mn st from 1.5mn st during the same time in 2009. Total revenue slumped 22pc and coal revenue dropped by 21pc as a result of the sales decrease.
