Peabody outbids Alpha for PRB lease

Peabody Energy has outbid Alpha Natural Resources to win mining rights to about 220mn short tons (200mn metric tonnes) of mineable coal in the Belle Ayr North coal tract in the southern Powder River basin, the company said yesterday. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) offered the tract for sale in response to a lease by application filed by Alpha Coal West, which owns the adjacent Belle Ayr mine. The tract is also adjacent to the southwestern lease boundary of Peabody's Caballo Mine.
