Chu pushes for more energy funds, innovation

US secretary of energy Steven Chu said yesterday strong federal support for research and development of new technologies could create jobs and bolster the economy. Chu's comments echoed a report released by a panel of White House advisors yesterday that called for increasing federal funding for energy research, development and deployment to $16bn/yr from less than half that today. The increase could be paid through tariffs on existing energy and by eventually putting a price on carbon.
