Contraception and the advances in family planning

Daniel R. Mishell, Jr., founded Contraception in January 1970 with the goal of providing "a medium for the rapid communication of advances and new knowledge ... in this important field." [1]. The journal has been wildly successful in meeting this goal with the uninterrupted, monthly publication of 516 issues containing important original research articles that presage and document every advance in the field. The journal also includes commentaries and reviews that place these scientific advances into their clinical, social, political and historical contexts. During these same decades, the digital revolution has changed the world of publishing, such that new articles accepted for publication in Contraception are now available online within weeks of acceptance, thus ensuring ever more rapid communication of new knowledge. In addition, Elsevier, the publisher since 1994, has archived all past issues, which are immediately available online for the continuing benefit of researchers and clinicians.
