RESEARCH PROFILE: SIMS analysis of the liver

As with any emerging technology, the nuts and bolts of secondary ion MS (SIMS) imaging had to be put in place before other scientific questions could be tackled. But according to experts, SIMS research now must shift in focus from instrumentation to application if it is to grow as a field (Anal. Chem. 2008, 80, 8865-8869). Alain Brunelle and colleagues at the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (France) and other institutions are doing their part by using SIMS to study the liver; they report this research in a new AC paper (DOI 10.1021/ac900045m).
