More separation in a shorter run.What makes an analytical sample valuable? In proteomic and metabolomic research, months or years of research may be devoted to making a single sample. The researchers can't breathe a sigh of relief until that sample is safely transferred, preferably one compound at a time, to a mass spectrometer. This scenario, described by Pat Young at Waters Corp., is the driving force behind recent advances in LC technology--increasingly smaller and more complex samples. Adding to the problem is finding the right protein--an instrument-intensive process. As Mark Atlas of Eksigent points out, the main goal of improving analyses is speed. Finding the protein or metabolite requires running many samples while ensuring the best possible data.
