By analyzing the NMR spectra of plasma, scientists have boosted the evidence that abnormal metabolism contributes to schizophrenia.Sabine Bahn,Elaine Holmes, and colleagues at the University of Cambridge and Imperial College London(both in the U.K.)found that the NMR signals from a number of lipids and proteins differentiated female twins with schizophrenia from unaffected co-twins(J.Proteome Res.2006,5,756-760).In statistical analyses, the unaffected co-twins fell between the affected twins and control twins."Therefore, schizophrenic twins can be separated from their unaffected twins based on a multiple metabolite signature in blood plasma," says Holmes.
